Jean-Michel Basquiat was a self-taught, groundbreaking American artist who rose to fame in the 1980s neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat first gained recognition in the late 1970s for his cryptic graffiti tagged "SAMO" around New York City with his friend Al Diaz.
